Broome Airport Information

General Airport History Broome International Airport started as nothing more than a patch of sand on Cable Beach back in 1922 when a Geraldton-Derby airmail service landed there. Later, in the mid 1920s, another strip was prepared next to the race course. During the 1930s an airstrip was laid out and expanded but the terminal was still just a covered shed. During World War II Broome saw a steep rise in air activity as it was a major re-fuelling stop for military aircraft. Broome also became the stop over for flying boats that dropped off Dutch refugees from Java, where the Japanese invasion was advancing. The airport was attacked by Japanese Zeros in 1942 and a young pilot named Gus Winckel shot down one of the fighter aircraft. There is still a road named after this pilot at Broome Airport. After the war, business in Broome revived with many pearlers returning to the city. Broome's pearling industry carried out successful experiments with cultured pearls and the city became a major center of business for the pearlers and also an attractive destination for the tourists. Broome Airport underwent several stages of expansion from 1991 to become the international airport that it is today.
