Darwin Airport Information

General Airport Information Darwin International Airport is located approximately 13km from the centre of Darwin, which is the largest city in Australia’s Northern Territory. It is the tenth busiest airport in Australia with the latest statistics showing it serviced more than 26 thousand flights and 1.7 million passengers in 2011. The airport shares its runway with the Royal Australian Air Force base in Darwin. History Parap Airfield was established in 1919 as the Australian terminal of the England to Australia air race, and served as the civilian airport for Darwin until 1945. The airport was attacked during the Second World War and used as a base by the Allies to support their air power in the Pacific. In 1945 the Parap airport was closed and its operations combined with the existing military airport. During the 1950s, 60s and early 70s it was an important stop for planes flying between Australia and Asia or Europe. However, as the range increased on aircraft it was no longer necessary for them to make a stop in Darwin. The current terminal opened in 1991 and is undergoing an expansion project that is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.
